Local Tourism Sancerre is an ancient walled town set high on a hill in one of France’s best loved, wine growing regions. The views over the vineyards and the Loire from the village are simply stunning. Sancerre is tranquil and yet well served with local shops. The baker's is just round the corner, as is the butcher and traiteur. Dining out is no problem as there are several local restaurants within the village. The Canal Lateral de la Loire is a delightful spot, running alongside the River Loire. Walk down there from the village and reward yourself with breakfast at the end! We often have a lazy lunch at the little cafe there. You can hire canoes at St Thibault and paddle back down the River Loire from as far up as you want, stopping off for a picnic wherever you wish. For the active holidaymaker, there is cycling, swimming, rowing, canoeing, tennis, golf, karting and even flying nearby. The local area is ideal cycling and walking territory with marked routes for both. You can cycle along the canal. Bikes are available at nearby St Thibault; the owner there is very helpful. La Charite, pictured above, is a lovely starting point for a canoe trip. Also shown above is Pouilly, famous for Pouilly Fume; the photograph was taken from the canoe as we went by. The historic towns of Bourges and Nevers are within easy driving distance. There are also numerous chateaux to visit. Perhaps best of all, the local wine growers welcome visitors for tastings.
